Seventh Grade Exchange: From Toulouse to Portland

Seventh Grade Exchange: From Toulouse to Portland

Each year, some of our seventh graders have the opportunity to participate in a true exchange with students in Toulouse, France.

From January 28 to February 13, French International students traveled to Toulouse, where they were welcomed into host families and immersed in daily life. They attended school alongside their French "host siblings,” practiced their language skills, and experienced life with a French family.

“I was really proud of myself because I am in Beginning French,” shared Ayla. “It proves I’ve been working hard on my French, and I learned a lot more of the language.”

A few weeks later, the Toulouse students traveled to Portland from April 1 to April 16. French International students hosted their same “host sibling.” The Toulouse students attended classes during the day and experienced life in the Pacific Northwest. Host families organized a variety of activities, from visiting the Portland Japanese Garden and OMSI to exploring the Oregon Coast and the Columbia River Gorge.

This exchange fosters meaningful relationships and broadens perspectives. Students gain a deeper understanding of another culture while discovering common ground with peers from across the world.

“It showed me we can make connections with people from all over the world,” said Jake. “We might speak a different language or life looks different, but we can make a connection. I feel happy the school chose me for this opportunity.”

The Toulouse exchange is an important partnership and opportunity as we educate global learners. Experiences like this help students build confidence, cultural understanding, and lasting connections.
