Fifth Graders Present PYP Exhibition Projects

On May 15, our fifth graders presented their Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition projects to fellow students, faculty, staff, families, and community members.

The Exhibition combines the skills, knowledge, and attributes students have developed throughout Maternelle and Lower School. For several weeks, students worked in small groups to investigate topics they were passionate about. They developed lines of inquiry, conducted research, took action, and reflected on their learning.

This year's projects covered a wide range of interests and issues, including space exploration, World War II, Make-A-Wish, polar bears, aviation, the WNBA, dance, cricket, soccer, the Amazon rainforest, LEGO, the NBA, and more. Students were grouped based on similar interests and developed lines of inquiry to guide their research.

Throughout the process, students worked with faculty mentors who supported and challenged their thinking. In addition to conducting research, students interviewed experts to gain deeper insights into their chosen topics.

A key component of the Exhibition is taking action. Students considered how they could make a positive impact related to their topic, whether through awareness campaigns, surveys, educational materials, or other initiatives designed to inspire change within their community.

The culmination of this work was a day of presentations in the gym, where each group shared its Exhibition journey. Students explained their research process, highlighted their findings, reflected on challenges and successes, and showcased the actions they took as a result of their learning.

During the Exhibition presentations, students, faculty, staff, and parents stopped by to engage with the presenters, ask questions, and learn from their research. These conversations provided fifth graders with multiple opportunities to practice public speaking, communication, and reflection while sharing topics they had become experts in.

The Exhibition showcases many of the elements of the International Baccalaureate framework. Students have to demonstrate the attributes of the IB Learner Profile by being inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, caring, open-minded, balanced, reflective, and principled individuals. Along the way, they also strengthen essential skills such as research, critical thinking, collaboration, self-management, and communication.

Most importantly, the Exhibition provides students with the opportunity to pursue their passions, explore issues that matter to them, and recognize the impact they can have on the world around them.
