Preschoolers Explore the World Through Their Senses

Preschoolers Explore the World Through Their Senses

Our preschool classes have hit their stride and are diving into their second unit of the school year. They are exploring the central idea of “we use our senses to reflect on the world around us.” This unit invites children to become curious investigators, observing, touching, smelling, tasting, and listening as they learn about themselves and others.

The learning focuses on understanding and identifying the five senses and exploring what students like and dislike. So far during the unit, students have participated in a variety of sensory activities. They’ve tried fruits and vegetables of all colors, identifying their textures, shapes, smells, and tastes. They’ve gone on walks in the forest and noticed the different sounds they hear in nature. They’ve made slime and homemade pizzas for other hands-on sensory activities.

The unit also provides opportunities for growth in language and expression. Students are practicing naming colors in French, expressing preferences, and communicating how different sensory experiences make them feel. This helps them learn about empathy and understanding perspective, recognizing that classmates may have different likes and dislikes and learning to appreciate those differences.

Every day, preschool students are learning and growing in their language, social, and gross motor skills.
