New Traditions: French International Celebrates Peace Day as a School

The International Day of Peace is observed by the United Nations on September 21. We celebrated as a school on September 25 with an all-school gathering and optional activities for students.

The day started on the field where everyone from TPS through eighth grade gathered for an all-school assembly. Señor played the bagpipes while everyone got settled, and the sixth graders kicked things off with a drum performance.

The assembly was hosted by three students, the founders of the new Peace Club in the Middle School. Students were involved in planning and executing the all-school assembly.

The sixth graders and our Admissions Assistant, Abri, sang an upbeat tune about leading with love. School leaders shared what peace means to them and how we can all contribute to creating a peaceful school and world. Some risk-taking middle schoolers shared poems about peace in English, French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish. There were a few other musical performances during the assembly, including a ballad by our Middle School Division Head Estelle, Lower School Music Teacher Nura, and Abri.

The final tune of the event was a sing-along to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” The performers created new lyrics to the verses while everyone hummed along and sang the chorus.

After the assembly, Peace Day continued in the Middle School with a smaller gathering. In the following advisory, groups discussed what peace means to them and how we can make the world a more peaceful place.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 and is dedicated to world peace. It aligns the IB Mission to create a more peaceful world, as well as French International’s mission to build a foundation for learners to effect change in the world.
