A More Personalized Middle School Schedule

A More Personalized Middle School Schedule

This year, French International’s Middle School has introduced a new schedule designed to give students more personalized academic support, greater choice, and additional opportunities to build community.

While the core classes remain the same, the two biggest changes are a daily advisory check-in and a daily flex period. The advisory touchpoint each morning helps students build social-emotional skills and create a culture of belonging. There is still a full advisory period once a week.

The new daily flex period is for learning support, learning extension, and for students to follow their passions. At the start of the year, students did their Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing to help teachers better understand students’ strengths and areas where they may benefit from additional help or to stretch their strengths. Friday’s flex period is for clubs where students can pursue their interests, with options ranging from crafting and choir to games and outdoor exploration and more. Students also have new choices within their weekly Design classes, allowing them to explore areas that spark their curiosity.

Additionally, students have dedicated homework time at the end of each day, with 15 minutes built into the schedule and an additional 15 minutes available for those who need it. This gives students time to begin assignments at school while building the independent learning habits they will need as they progress through Middle School.

These changes came after months of reflection by the Middle School pedagogical team, as well as feedback from students, parents, and teachers. Together, these changes reflect a simple goal: to better meet students where they are and give them the support, challenge, choice, and connection they need to thrive.
