Exploring Rights and Responsibilities Through Mock Trial

Exploring Rights and Responsibilities Through Mock Trial

As part of their study of rights and responsibilities, seventh graders examined what it means to be both members of a community and participants in a judicial system built on the principle of trial by jury. They quickly discovered that what happens in a courtroom affects far more than the individuals standing before a judge.

Their mock trial for this unit was a defamation case involving an incident at an amusement park and an influencer who made viral claims about it on social media. In preparation for a mock trial, students were grouped into plaintiff and defense teams. They had roles as attorneys and witnesses, and had to prepare questions for their sides.

Parent attorneys served as judges, and eighth-grade jurors joined to help make the trial feel more real. They presented opening and closing statements, questioned their witnesses, directed cross-examination, and presented evidence. The judges offered feedback to the students and explained how a courtroom typically operates.

In the end, the mock trial unit challenged students to think critically, speak thoughtfully, collaborate intentionally, and wrestle with complex ideas about fairness and responsibility. Through this experience, seventh graders didn’t just learn how trials work; they also explored what it means to pursue justice in a diverse and interconnected world.
