May Global Mindset Moments

May Global Mindset Moments

Throughout the year, we share weekly Global Mindset Moments on social media to demonstrate how our mission is playing out in our school and how we are fulfilling our Strategic Plan. Here are the May Global Mindset Moments:

Global Mindset Moment (May 30): Casey Tran, one of our kindergarten assistant teachers, made salad rolls with students and staff from all three divisions. Cooking with Casey was part of our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month celebrations. The AAPI Heritage Month committee is one of ten committees formed to recognize, honor, and celebrate the diverse cultures at French International and is part of the strategic plan pillar of people. The celebrations have been a school-wide success as we incorporate different cultures, languages, and traditions into our educational programming.

Global Mindset Moment (May 23): We have a lot to share from the eighth-grade trips, and it sounds like everyone is having a blast! Over the last two weeks, we've had students in five different countries, including Taiwan. The group in Taiwan has been exploring local sites, tasting foods, attending school, and practicing the Mandarin they've learned during their time at French International. The international trips are part of both the program and presence pillars as we prepare students to be global learners and make connections all over the world.

Global Mindset Moment (May 16): First graders finished exploring the central idea of "the world works with cycles." They read nonfiction books about living things and their life cycles. Each student chose a living thing and created a vest about that thing with a fact, an opinion, and that organism's life cycle. They visited another class to present on their living thing. Not only was this an opportunity for first graders to learn about the life cycle of a plant or animal of their choice, but it was a chance for them to present their knowledge to other students. We want to instill confidence in our students' research and presentation skills as we prepare them to be global leaders.

Global Mindset Moment (May 9): Last week, eighth graders performed renditions of two  Shakespeare plays. The eighth graders had to rewrite the stories in a more modern way so that their peers could understand. They wrote the scripts, rehearsed, and performed the shows for sixth and seventh graders. Throughout their time at our school, students get countless opportunities to build confidence in their public speaking skills, preparing students for success in high school and beyond.

Global Mindset Moment (May 2): Yesterday, first graders had their field studies day, during which they learned about Wasco traditions from Clifton and Christine Bruno. They learned about salmon and how Clifton's father and grandfather used to fish for it. They went into the forest to collect leaves and herbs to make tea, and used items in nature to create their own toys. First graders are exploring, "Organisms are interconnected in nature." Through our programs pillar, we want students to understand and make an impact within their community, and it's a great opportunity to learn from the nature on campus.
