French International Hosts Students and Teachers from Germany

French International Hosts Students and Teachers from Germany

From October 4 through the 16, French International Middle School had 15 students and two teachers visiting from Pfullingen, Germany. The students stayed with French International host families who showed them around Portland.

The German visitors attended school with their host students and shadowed them around classes. The group took two field trips: one to the Oregon Historical Society and a walking tour around the city, and another to the Japanese American Museum of Oregon and the Portland Chinatown Museum.

On the weekends and days off of school, host families took the German students to explore more of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. The host families also got together for large group activities like bowling and going to the pumpkin patch. A couple of students mentioned how much fun the pumpkin patch was, especially because pumpkin patches and Halloween celebrations are not part of the culture in Pfullingen.

The host families also gave the German students an opportunity to learn more about home life in Portland and the United States. Hosting a student is an opportunity to forge a connection with someone from another country and share about cultures, traditions, and experiences.

“It was a lot of fun. You get to do activities, but you don’t have to change your whole life. You actually get to show them your life.” -Alex

“After a couple of days, we became friends, and I liked having a new person in our house. It was a fun experience, and I learned a couple words in German that I didn’t know.” -Kaiya
