Fourth Graders Learn to Play the Ukulele
French International fourth graders are learning to strum in music class and tackling the ukulele.
The unit builds on different elements of music by first introducing the concept of chords and moving on to progressions. The students learn a chord and then work on playing it in a song, moving from slower to faster speeds. From there, they learned to play songs with multiple chords, again moving from slower to faster beats.
The students can also connect the ukulele to what they are learning in their other classes. For example, fourth graders are also learning fractions which helps them understand the different lengths of notes.
We want to educate lifelong learners who continue to try new things as they navigate the world. The process of learning something new and watching it go from challenging to doable and even easy is rewarding for our students, and we believe will help them navigate different challenges.
