A Historic First: Inaugural Girls’ Soccer Team at French International

A Historic First: Inaugural Girls’ Soccer Team at French International

For the first time in school history, French International is represented on the pitch by a girls' soccer team.

The team formed thanks to a student-led initiative. Last school year, then-fifth graders Kati and Isabelle started a petition and collected signatures urging the school administration to consider adding a girls' team. They collected 40 signatures, and Kati wrote the formal request. With support from some parents, the girls also found coaches for the team and presented everything to the school administration.

They made it happen.

This year, the girls kicked off their inaugural season with 15 players. The group includes sixth and seventh graders, each bringing a mix of soccer experience to the field. Some have been playing since they were young; others are new to the sport and appreciate the opportunity to learn. Whether they are new to the game or have years of experience, all 15 players are doing something no one else has in school history.

“I like the thought of being the first,” Kait said. “Every time something new happens, it’s the first for our school, like Izzy scored the first-ever goal for our school.”

While this season has been a great learning experience for players, coaches, and parents, it’s also laying the foundation for the future of girls’ soccer at French International.

“I hope more people will want to play,” Kati added. “I want us to help new players learn and grow.”

What began as a student-led initiative has led to a new opportunity for students. This team is first, but certainly not the last.
