Learning Beyond the Classroom: Lower School Field Studies

Field studies are an important part of the Lower School experience, providing students with opportunities to connect classroom learning to real-world exploration. Through hands-on experiences in nature, students deepen their understanding of science, ecosystems, and their place in the world.

This spring, first through fourth graders had a unique field study experience tailored to their learning and developmental stage.

First graders visited the Clackamas Community College Nature Park, where they explored their central idea, "Organisms are connected in nature." Students investigated the plants and animals that inhabit the park and observed the relationships between living things and their environment.

Second graders headed to Cooper Mountain Nature Park for a day of outdoor discovery. Students hiked through the park, searched for plants and animals during a scavenger hunt, and worked with art teacher Stephanie to create landscape paintings inspired by the natural beauty around them. The trip combined science, observation, and creativity while encouraging students to engage with the environment.

For third graders, field studies expanded into a multi-day adventure. Students spent three days and two nights on the Oregon Coast exploring marine ecosystems and the importance of environmental stewardship. Highlights included visits to the Port of Garibaldi and the Maritime Museum, hands-on marine studies, kite flying, playtime on the beach, s’mores by the campfire, and a stop in Tillamook for ice cream. The experience brought their studies of ocean ecosystems to life and fostered independence, collaboration, and curiosity.

Fourth graders traveled to Central Oregon for a three-day trip focused on ecosystems, natural resources, and food systems. Students explored the area around Suttle Lake, visited the High Desert Museum, and toured Seed to Table Farm to learn more about where food comes from and how it is produced. At camp, they participated in fun activities like kayaking, archery, fishing, and fun games.

These field study experiences reflect French International's commitment to aligning science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) learning across grade levels. Each trip is designed to build on students' classroom learning while providing meaningful opportunities for exploration and discovery. As students progress through Lower School, their field studies become increasingly immersive, preparing them for future academic challenges.
