December/January Global Mindset Moments

December/January Global Mindset Moments

Throughout the year, we share weekly Global Mindset Moments on social media to demonstrate how our mission is playing out in our school and how we are fulfilling our Strategic Plan. Here are the December and January Global Mindset Moments:

Global Mindset Moment (January 31): These eighth graders' final assignment in their design class was to create a map of a fantasy world, including landmarks, buildings, town names, natural elements, and more. Design classes teach students creative thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills to create solutions or products that respond to a need or fulfill a purpose. They utilize the design cycle of inquiring and analyzing, developing ideas, creating solutions, and evaluating. The skills they build and the processes they learn are applicable as they go through school, pursue careers, and become global citizens.

Global Mindset Moment (January 24): Pre-K students are exploring the central idea of "Traditional songs, rhymes, and tales shape cultural identity." During this unit, students are strengthening their communication skills through stories, poems, songs, and rhymes, including presenting this galette song and dance. Our mission is to educate curious and critical thinkers and create a foundation for learners to thrive. Our pre-k students are building a variety of skills in this unit and learning about traditions all over the globe as they grow up in an interconnected world.

Global Mindset Moment (January 17): This week, we have dirt moving and concrete pouring at the Maternelle site. Students got to see a dump truck in action during recess, too! Our full campus transformation continues as we work to fulfill the commitments made in the place pillar of our Strategic Plan. Every week, things are changing, and we are excited to see the impact of our new classrooms on the impact our students' experience.

Global Mindset Moment (January 10): This week, first-grade students and families donated clothes, shoes, and toys to the Northwest Children's Outreach. This was part of their exploration of the central idea of "Growth means changes" and the idea of "think global, act local." Students and teachers discussed what they do at home with clothes when they get too small. The students listed ideas and decided to donate them to kids in need. As an IB world school, we aim to develop internationally-minded students who understand everyone has a shared responsibility to the connected global community, and we're proud of our students for trying to make a difference in our region.

Global Mindset Moment (January 3): Before the break, first graders finished exploring the central idea of "Growth means change." They learned about the human body and welcomed a cardiologist to teach them about the heart. They learned where the heart is, how big it is, what it does, and what we can do to keep our hearts healthy. We're grateful for our community members who volunteer their time to share their expertise in the classroom. Additionally, as our program prepares students to be successful in the world, we want them to understand their own bodies and how to be healthy.

Global Mindset Moment (December 27): Before the break, fifth graders finished their solar-powered car project. The students designed and built the cars using the new 3D printers (purchased by the Annual Fund). They also created motors that run using solar energy. Fifth grade just finished exploring the central idea of "Advances in science and technology transform society." This project connected with their studies as they explored how machines and tools can help us and what their advantages and disadvantages may be. As we talk about programs that prepare, we want students to have hands-on experiences that explore different interests and use various machines, hopefully leading to them finding their passions.

Global Mindset Moment (December 20): Yesterday, our Middle Schoolers gathered to celebrate the holiday season together. Sixth (and some seventh) graders performed songs in their beginning language. This is such a fun tradition to celebrate the many languages in our Middle School program and give students an opportunity to showcase what they've been learning in their beginning language classes.

Global Mindset Moment (December 13): Fifth graders from L’Etoile French School visited us this week for a math competition with our fifth and sixth-grade students. It was a great opportunity to build connections within the greater community and give everyone the opportunity to collaborate in mathematics. Thank you L'Etoile, for joining us!

Global Mindset Moment (December 6): Third graders are exploring the central idea of "Ways of life change over time." They learned about the history of electricity and then worked with circuits. They learned about different types of circuits and then created their own with the goal of making a light bulb work. Creating a robust and expansive STEAM program was a major goal of the Program pillar of our strategic plan. Students continue to do hands-on projects that connect to their units of inquiry throughout the year.
