AI Usage Policy at FI

AI Usage Policy at FI

Guiding Principle

This policy is designed to provide guidance to students, staff, and the school community on the appropriate and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies. Its purpose is to uphold FI's commitment to academic integrity, student privacy, and the centrality of human-led education, while acknowledging the potential benefits and risks that AI presents. This policy applies to all AI systems and tools used for education, administration, and operations within our school.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that perform problem-solving or decision-making abilities typically associated with humans. Generative AI specifically refers to tools like Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and others* that can produce new content, such as text or images, based on the patterns they've learned from training data. While these tools can be powerful and provide useful suggestions, their output is not always accurate, complete, or free of bias.
This guidance complements and aligns with existing school policies on technology use, data protection, academic integrity, and student support.

Guiding Principles for AI Use

Keep Humans Central & Foster Human Creativity

  • Prioritize human interaction: AI tools are intended to complement human interactions and enhance the relationships between educators and students, not to replace them. The primary goal is to support people, not to substitute for them.
  • Enhance decision-making: AI serves as an assistive tool to support and enhance decision-making. People remain responsible and accountable for their own decisions and actions.
  • Catalyze creativity: AI should be used to spark new ideas, assist with research, and automate routine tasks, thereby improving efficiency for more creative and thoughtful pursuits.

Maintain Transparency & Adhere to Ethical Standards

  • Be open about AI use: When AI is used in any educational or administrative process, its role and the extent of its influence must be transparent to all affected parties.
  • Provide proper attribution: In line with our academic integrity policy, proper attribution or acknowledgment of AI assistance is required where applicable, respecting original authorship and intellectual property.
  • Uphold ethical principles: Ethical considerations, such as data privacy, student autonomy, and transparency, must never be compromised for convenience.

Promote Accessibility & Evaluate for Bias

  • Bridge the digital divide: We will adopt AI tools that actively support diverse learners and promote accessibility, ensuring that technology helps reduce barriers to learning, not create them.
  • Evaluate for bias: All AI tools will be critically evaluated for potential biases, safety, privacy, and ethical concerns before they are adopted. We must acknowledge and actively work to mitigate any biases that could lead to inequitable outcomes.

Adhere to Privacy Standards

  • Comply with privacy laws: Strict compliance with all relevant privacy laws, including FERPA, is mandatory. All AI tools must have robust data security practices.
  • Protect personal information: The use of AI tools to share or process protected information, such as student names, addresses, or other private data, is strictly forbidden. Users must not enter personally identifiable information into AI systems.

Our Boundaries

The following actions and uses of AI are strictly prohibited at Fi:

  • Sole Reliance on AI: AI tools must never be used as a complete substitute for essential human interactions, professional judgment, or due process. The final responsibility for any decision or action always rests with a human.
  • Ignoring Equity: It is prohibited to adopt AI tools that disadvantage or fail to accommodate diverse student populations. Any tool must be inclusive and accessible, in line with Fi's inclusion policy.
  • Overlooking Ethics: Ethical considerations, including data privacy, student autonomy, and transparency, must never be compromised for convenience or efficiency.
  • Sharing Protected Information: Do not use AI tools to share or process protected information, such as student names, addresses, or other private data.
  • Trusting Unverified Claims: Do not use AI tools that lack independent research backing, credible evaluations, or a clear track record of effectiveness and safety.
  • Using AI for High-Stakes Decisions: AI tools may not be used to make high-stakes decisions, including but not limited to disciplinary actions, student evaluations, grading, or generating anecdotal comments for report cards. These tools are intended to support human oversight, not to replace it.
  • Academic Dishonesty & Misuse: Using AI tools to engage in academic dishonesty, manipulate information, or to impersonate others for bullying, harassment, or any form of intimidation is strictly prohibited. AI tools will also not be used to monitor teachers or students, or track movements.

Review Cycle

We are committed to auditing, monitoring, and evaluating our school's use of AI. Recognizing that AI technologies are evolving rapidly, this policy will be reviewed and updated on a yearly basis, or promptly as technologies evolve, to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
